Questions & Answers about La serata è stata fantastica!
Why is the past tense of "to be" è stata instead of using avere?
In Italian, verbs that describe states of being or movement usually take essere (to be) as their helper verb in the past tense (passato prossimo). The verb essere itself is one of these! So, to say "was," you literally say "is been." This is exactly how the past tense of piacere works in this lesson, too.
Why does stata end in "-a" here?
Whenever you use essere as the helper verb in the past tense, the past participle (the second part of the verb, like stata) must match the gender and number of the subject. Since la serata is feminine singular, stato changes to stata. You have to do the exact same thing with piaciuta when saying you liked a feminine object!
What is the difference between sera and serata?
Could I use the imperfect tense and say La serata era fantastica?
