L'università inizia a settembre o ottobre.

From Lesson 51:Months of the year·Italian

Questions & Answers about L'università inizia a settembre o ottobre.

Why are settembre and ottobre written with lowercase letters?
In Italian, months of the year and days of the week are not capitalized unless they appear at the very beginning of a sentence.
The English translation says 'in September', but the Italian sentence uses a. Which preposition is correct for months?
To say 'in' a specific month, Italian usually uses the preposition a (like a settembre). However, using the preposition in (like in settembre) is also completely correct and very common. You can use whichever you prefer!
Do I need to repeat the preposition a before ottobre?
No, you do not need to repeat it. Just like in English ('in September or October'), you can use the preposition once, and it will naturally apply to both months connected by the word o (or).
Why does università have an accent mark on the last letter?
The accent mark tells you to stress that final sound when speaking: oo-nee-ver-see-TAH. As a handy bonus rule, Italian nouns that end in an accented vowel do not change their ending in the plural. 'The university' is l'università and 'the universities' is le università.
