The months of the year
To talk about when events happen, you need to know the twelve months (i mesi). In Italian, all months are masculine and are not capitalized unless they begin a sentence.
| January and February are very cold months. | Gennaio e febbraio sono mesi molto freddi. |
| June and July are hot months. | Giugno e luglio sono mesi caldi. |
Saying "in" a month
When saying that something happens "in" a certain month, drop the definite article. Instead, use either the preposition a or in. Both are correct and widely used interchangeably.
| In February there are twenty-eight days. | A febbraio ci sono ventotto giorni. |
| There are a lot of people in April and May. | C'è molta gente in aprile e maggio. |
| In July and August the shops are closed. | A luglio e agosto i negozi sono chiusi. |
You can also use prepositions like tra (between) when talking about a span of time across different months.
| Marco returns to Italy between January and March. | Marco torna in Italia tra gennaio e marzo. |
Throughout the year
As you move through the calendar, the grammatical patterns remain exactly the same for all twelve months.
| March and April are beautiful months here. | Marzo e aprile sono mesi belli qui. |
| We leave for France in May or June. | Partiamo per la Francia a maggio o a giugno. |
| The university starts in September or October. | L'università inizia a settembre o ottobre. |
| We have a lot of work in November and December. | Abbiamo molto lavoro a novembre e dicembre. |
