Questions & Answers about Marzo e aprile sono mesi belli qui.
Why is aprile not capitalized, but Marzo is?
In Italian, the names of months and seasons are not capitalized unless they are the first word of a sentence. So aprile is lowercase, but Marzo gets a capital letter only because it starts the sentence!
I see the word for months is mesi. Is the singular form meso?
Actually, the singular word for month is mese. In Italian, nouns that end in -e in the singular change their ending to -i in the plural, whether they are masculine or feminine. Since mese is a masculine noun, it becomes mesi in the plural.
If mesi comes from mese, how do we know it is masculine so we use belli?
Words ending in -e can be tricky because the ending does not clearly show if they are masculine or feminine. You just have to memorize their gender when you learn them! Mese is masculine, so its pluralmesi requires the masculine plural adjectivebelli.
Why does the sentence say mesi belli instead of belli mesi?
In English, we put the descriptive adjectivebefore the noun, like beautiful months. In Italian, most descriptive adjectives go directly after the noun they describe. So, you literally say months beautiful, which is mesi belli.
