Why is it тебе and not ты?
Ты is the nominative case (used for the subject of a sentence).
Тебе is the dative case (used mostly for the “receiver” of an action or the person something is directed to).
The verb понравиться / нравиться literally means “to be pleasing to someone”.
So in Russian you don’t say “you will like this film”, but “this film will be pleasing to you” → этот фильм понравится тебе.
That’s why тебе (dative) is used, not ты (nominative).
What does the -ся ending in понравится mean?
The ending -ся (or -сь after vowels) is a reflexive marker. It often shows:
- a reflexive action (washing oneself: мыться)
- reciprocal action (meeting each other: встретиться)
- or, as here, a special meaning of the verb
With нравиться / понравиться, the -ся is just part of the verb and signals this “be pleasing to someone” pattern. You can’t say понравит without -ся; that would be wrong.
