Questions & Answers about Sollte die Beleuchtung zu dunkel sein, kann der Masseur nicht arbeiten.
Why does this sentence start with the verb Sollte instead of Wenn?
In German, you can drop the word wenn (if) to form a conditional clause. When you do this, the conjugated verb moves to the very first position. This means the exact same thing as Wenn die Beleuchtung zu dunkel sein sollte. It is a direct parallel to the English structure "Should the lighting be too dark...".
What nuance does sollte add here compared to simply saying Ist die Beleuchtung zu dunkel?
Using the Subjunctive II (Konjunktiv II) form sollte adds a sense of unlikelihood. It translates best to "If the lighting happens to be too dark" or "In the unlikely event that it's too dark." While a regular present tense verb states a neutral condition, sollte makes the scenario sound slightly more hypothetical.
Why does the second half of the sentence start with kann rather than the subject der Masseur?
German relies on the V2 (verb-second) rule for main clauses. The entire first conditional clause (Sollte die Beleuchtung zu dunkel sein) acts as a single block of information, occupying Position 1. Therefore, the conjugated verb of the main clause (kann) must immediately follow the comma to take Position 2, pushing the subject (der Masseur) right after it.
Does dropping wenn and starting with the verb only work with sollen?
