Questions & Answers about Die Säure ist am schlechtesten für das Riff und die Korallen.
How does the noun die Säure (the acid) form from the adjective sauer (sour)?
It uses the exact pattern from this lesson: adding an -e and an umlaut. The au in sauer gets an umlaut to become äu. Notice that the original e in sauer is dropped to make the word flow better, giving us die Säure instead of die Säuere.
Could I say ist das Schlechteste instead of ist am schlechtesten?
Yes, but the grammar and nuance shift slightly. Am schlechtesten is the predicative superlative, meaning it acts as an adjective describing how bad the acid is. If you use das Schlechteste (capitalized), you are turning the adjective into a noun, meaning "the worst thing".
Does the word Säure only mean chemical acid, or can it mean sourness in food?
It means both! Just as sauer can mean chemically acidic or flavorfully sour, die Säure is used for both dangerous chemical acids (as in this sentence about the coral reef) and culinary acidity, like the tartness in coffee, wine, or fruit.
Why don't the articles for das Riff and die Korallen change after the preposition für?
They actually are in the accusative case here, because für always requires the accusative. However, for neuter words (das Riff) and plurals (die Korallen), the accusative articles are identical to their nominative forms, so there is no visible spelling change.
