Questions & Answers about Wir haben keine Mathematik. Stattdessen schreiben wir einen Aufsatz.
Why is the verb inverted (schreiben wir) after stattdessen?
Stattdessen (instead) is an adverbial connector, not a coordinating conjunction like und or aber. Because it occupies the first position in the new sentence, the verb schreiben must immediately follow in the second position to maintain the strict V2 (verb-second) rule. This pushes the subject wir into the third position.
Could I just use statt or anstatt here instead of stattdessen?
No, because they function differently. Stattdessen is an adverb meaning 'instead of that' and introduces a standard main clause. Statt and anstatt are prepositions (requiring a noun) or subordinating conjunctions (requiring an infinitive clause). To use anstatt, you would have to restructure and combine the sentences completely, such as: Anstatt Mathematik zu haben, schreiben wir einen Aufsatz.
Why is the first sentence negated with keine rather than nicht?
As a quick refresher: when you negate a noun that has no article (like the school subject Mathematik here) or an indefinite article (ein/eine), you must use a form of kein. You would use nicht if you were negating a specific noun with a definite article (like die Mathematik) or negating the verb action itself.
