Changing Plans with Stattdessen
When plans change or you want to describe an alternative action, you can use the adverb stattdessen (instead).
Because stattdessen is an adverb rather than a coordinating conjunction (like und or aber), placing it at the beginning of a sentence triggers standard V2 (verb-second) word order. This means the conjugated verb comes immediately after stattdessen, pushing the subject into the third position.
Notice how the verb and subject swap places right after stattdessen:

| Biology is cancelled. Instead, we have chemistry in the classroom. | Biologie fällt aus. Stattdessen haben wir Chemie im Klassenzimmer. |
| We are not reading the book. Instead, we are doing group work with the worksheet. | Wir lesen das Buch nicht. Stattdessen machen wir eine Gruppenarbeit mit dem Arbeitsblatt. |
Substituting Subjects and Schedules
At school, schedules change all the time. Stattdessen is the perfect tool for connecting a cancelled event with the new plan. The first sentence often establishes what is not happening (using nicht, kein, or a word like ausfallen - to be cancelled), and the second sentence delivers the alternative.
| We are not writing an exam today. Instead, we are discussing the curriculum for mathematics. | Wir schreiben heute keine Klausur. Stattdessen besprechen wir den Lehrplan für Mathematik. |
| The teacher is absent. Instead, the substitute checks the attendance. | Der Lehrer fehlt. Stattdessen kontrolliert die Vertretung die Anwesenheit. |
