Learn German: Wer Stammgast ist, braucht nicht zu warten. - Whoever is a regular guest does not need to wait.

Here, Wer is a free relative pronoun meaning "whoever" or "the person who". It introduces a relative clause without pointing back to a specific noun. Instead, the entire first clause (Wer Stammgast ist) acts as the subject of the main sentence.

Is it okay to add a pronoun like der after the comma?

Yes, you can! You could say Wer Stammgast ist, der braucht nicht zu warten. However, when the "whoever" acts as the subject (nominative case) in both halves of the sentence, it is very common to drop the pronoun in the second half.

Why does the second half of the sentence start with the verb braucht?

German main clauses require the conjugated verb to be in the second position. The entire first clause (Wer Stammgast ist) counts as the first block of information. Therefore, the verb braucht must come immediately after the comma to take position two.

Why use braucht nicht zu warten instead of a modal verb like muss nicht warten?

Both mean that the person doesn't have to wait. German frequently uses brauchen with a negative word (like nicht) to express that an action isn't necessary. Just remember that unlike true modal verbs, brauchen requires the word zu before the infinitive verb at the end.

Why is there no article before ?
