Questions & Answers about Wenn ich ihn nur nicht überboten hätte!
Why do we add "nur" to this sentence? Doesn't "wenn" already mean "if"?
While wenn means "if", adding the particle nur (or sometimes doch) completely changes the tone. Together with the Konjunktiv II verb hätte, it turns a basic condition into a strong exclamation of regret or an unfulfilled wish, translating to "If only...!"
I learned that past participles usually start with "ge-". Why is it "überboten" and not "übergeboten"?
The verb überbieten (to outbid) starts with the prefix über-. In this context, über- is an inseparable prefix. Verbs with inseparable prefixes do not get the ge- added to them when forming the past participle.
Why does the conjugated verb "hätte" go at the very end of the sentence?
Because the sentence starts with wenn, which is a subordinating conjunction. Words like wenn, dass, and weil always push the conjugated verb to the very end of their clause. Even though this sentence is a standalone exclamation and doesn't have a main clause attached to it, the word order rule for wenn still applies.
Could I drop "Wenn" and start the sentence with "Hätte" to mean the exact same thing?
Yes! You can drop Wenn and move the conjugated verb to the first position to express the same unfulfilled wish. The sentence would become: Hätte ich ihn nur nicht überboten! Both versions are extremely common in German and mean exactly the same thing.
