Questions & Answers about Sie haben exklusiven Zugang, wenn Sie ein Mitglied sind.
Why does exklusiv have an -en ending in exklusiven Zugang?
Zugang (access) is a masculine noun (der Zugang) and acts as the direct object of haben, so it is in the accusative case. Since there is no article (like einen or den) before it, the adjective exklusiv takes the strong masculine accusative ending -en.
Why is the verb sind placed at the very end of the sentence?
The word wenn is a subordinating conjunction. Subordinating conjunctions introduce a dependent clause and always "kick" the conjugated verb (in this case, sind) to the very end of that clause.
Could I use ob here instead of wenn to mean "if"?
No, because wenn is used for conditions (meaning "in the event that"). Ob translates to "if" only in the sense of "whether" (for example, expressing doubt: "I don't know if I am a member"). Since this sentence sets a condition for getting access, you must use wenn.
Why is ein Mitglied not in the accusative case, since it comes after the subject Sie?
The verb sein (to be), conjugated here as sind, is a linking verb. It connects the subject to a description or identity rather than acting upon an object. Therefore, it takes the nominative case on both sides. Mitglied is a neuter noun, so it stays as ein Mitglied in the nominative.
