Questions & Answers about Je mehr Zeit vergeht, desto ruhiger bin ich.
Why is the verb at the end in the first half, but not in the second half?
The Je part is a subordinate clause, which pushes the conjugated verb (vergeht) to the very end. The desto part is a main clause. The phrase desto ruhiger counts as the first position, so the verb (bin) must take position two, right before the subject (ich).
Why do "mehr" and "Zeit" stay together right after "Je"?
In this structure, the comparative word must immediately follow Je. Because mehr (more) directly describes the noun Zeit (time), they form a single block (mehr Zeit) that stays together at the start of the clause.
Can I use "umso" instead of "desto" in this sentence?
Yes! In proportional comparisons, desto and umso mean the exact same thing and are completely interchangeable. The second half of the sentence could easily be umso ruhiger bin ich.
Is "mehr" just the comparative form of "viel"?
Exactly. Just like in English where "much" becomes "more", the German word viel (much/a lot) has the irregular comparative form mehr (more).
