Questions & Answers about Der König wollte helfen, aber er konnte nicht.
Why do wollte and konnte end in -te if this lesson is about irregular verbs?
Modal verbs like wollen and können are technically 'mixed' verbs. They use the regular -te ending for the simple past (Präteritum), but verbs with an umlaut lose it in the past tense. So, können changes its stem to konnte. Since wollen doesn't have an umlaut, it simply becomes wollte.
Why is helfen at the end of the first clause?
Wollte is a modal verb. In standard German sentence structure, a conjugated modal verb goes in the second position, and it kicks the main verb (helfen) to the very end of the clause in its infinitive (dictionary) form.
Why doesn't aber push the verb konnte to the end of the sentence?
Aber (but) is a coordinating conjunction. Words like und, aber, or oder occupy 'position zero' in a sentence. This means they don't affect the word order at all. The subject er takes position 1, and the verb konnte takes position 2.
Can I just end the sentence with nicht, or is a verb missing after konnte?
