Questions & Answers about Das gebrauchte Fahrrad hat eine tolle Qualität, aber leider keinen guten Zustand.
Why do we say eine tolle Qualität but keinen guten Zustand?
Both phrases are direct objects of the verb hat, so they are in the accusative case. Qualität is feminine, so after the indefinite article eine, the adjective takes an -e ending (tolle). Zustand is masculine, so in the accusative case, the negative article becomes keinen and the adjective takes an -en ending (guten).
Why is the ending on gebrauchte just -e instead of -es for the neuter noun Fahrrad?
Because it comes after the definite article das, which already clearly shows the gender of the noun. When the definite article does the heavy lifting, the adjective just gets a simple -e ending in the nominative case. If there were no article at all, it would be gebrauchtes Fahrrad.
Why does the sentence use keinen instead of nicht to mean "not a good condition"?
In German, you use forms of kein to negate nouns that would typically use an indefinite article (ein or eine) or no article at all. Since you are negating the idea of "a good condition", you must use keinen rather than nicht einen.
Why isn't the verb hat repeated in the second half of the sentence?
Just like in English, you do not need to repeat the subject and verb if they stay the same after the conjunction aber (but). The full thought is aber leider hat es keinen guten Zustand, but dropping the repeated words sounds much more natural.
