Questions & Answers about In der Bibliothek lernt man besser, denn es ist ruhig.
Why does man use the verb form lernt instead of lernen?
The pronoun man means "one," "people," or "you" in a general sense. Even though it refers to multiple people conceptually, it is grammatically singular. It always uses the 3rd-person singular verb ending (-t), exactly like er, sie, or es.
Why is the word order lernt man instead of man lernt?
German requires the verb to be the second idea in a main clause. Because the sentence starts with the location In der Bibliothek (Position 1), the verb lernt must come next (Position 2). The subject man is then pushed to the other side of the verb.
Since library is feminine (die Bibliothek), why does the sentence say In der Bibliothek?
The preposition in is a "two-way" preposition that can take either the accusative or dative case. Because we are talking about a fixed location (where something is happening) rather than movement toward a destination, we use the dative case. In the dative case, the feminine word die changes to der.
Why doesn't the word denn (because) push the verb ist to the end of the sentence?
