### Verbs that need one particular noun

German builds a great deal of everyday meaning out of a fixed noun plus a fixed verb. The parts are words you already have; the combination is what has to be learnt whole.

**Bescheid** is capitalised and never takes an article in these two. **sich Sorgen machen** puts the person in the dative — *mach **dir** keine Sorgen* — and the noun is always plural here.

German has a second impersonal worth learning whole: **es kommt darauf an** — *it depends*. It can stand alone as a whole answer.

### Two set phrases

**Gott sei Dank** is *thank goodness* — used by the entirely non-religious, exactly like the English. And **im Voraus** is *in advance*, which is how a German letter thanks you before you have done anything: *Vielen Dank **im Voraus**.*
