Questions & Answers about Est-ce que tu te souviens de mon nom ?
Why don't we use savoir or connaître here since we are talking about knowing a name?
While savoir is used for knowing a fact (like a name) and connaître is used for being familiar with a person or thing, the English concept of 'remembering' doesn't use either of these. To express recalling a memory, French uses a completely different verb: se souvenir. Why is there a te before souviens?
The verb for 'to remember' is se souvenir, which is a pronominal (or reflexive) verb. That means it needs an extra pronoun that matches the subject. For tu (you), the matching pronoun is te. It is a bit like saying 'Do you remind yourself'. Why do we need the word de before mon nom?
In French, the verb se souvenir must be followed by the preposition de when you state what you are remembering. Think of it as meaning 'to have a memory of' my name. If you leave out de, the sentence is grammatically incorrect. Could I ask this without using Est-ce que?
Yes! You can simply say Tu te souviens de mon nom ? and raise your voice at the end, which is very common in casual spoken French. You could also invert the verb and subject (Te souviens-tu de mon nom ?), but that sounds much more formal. Learn Est-ce que tu te souviens de mon nom and more in French
