Knowing facts vs. familiarity (savoir, connaître)

In English, the verb "to know" covers everything: knowing a person, a fact, or how to do something. French uses two distinct verbs: connaître and savoir.

The verb connaître (to be familiar with)

Use connaître to mean to be familiar with a person, place, or thing. It is followed directly by a noun.

PronounForm
jeje connais
tutu connais
il / elle / onil connaît
nousnous connaissons
vousvous connaissez
ils / ellesils connaissent

Notice the -ss- in the plural forms.

I know Paris well, but I don't know this famous street.
Je connais bien Paris, mais je ne connais pas cette rue célèbre.
Do you know the famous cathedral in this city?
Est-ce que vous connaissez la célèbre cathédrale de cette ville ?

The verb savoir (to know a fact / how to do something)

Use savoir when you know a fact, a piece of information, or how to do something. It is usually followed by a question word (like , quand, or comment), a conjunction (like que), or an infinitive verb.

PronounForm
jeje sais
tutu sais
il / elle / onil sait
nousnous savons
vousvous savez
ils / ellesils savent
She never knows where the metro station is.
Elle ne sait jamais où est la station de métro.

Followed by an infinitive, savoir means knowing how to do something.

The tourist knows this country, but he does not know how to drive here.
Le touriste connaît ce pays, mais il ne sait pas conduire ici.

Putting them together

You connaissez (are familiar with) a noun, but you savez (know) a specific detail.

He knows the guide, but he does not know what his name is.
Il connaît le guide, mais il ne sait pas comment il s'appelle.

When exploring a city, you will often need both verbs. Because s'orienter (to find one's way) is an infinitive, use savoir to say you know how to do it.

I know how to orient myself to find the right route.
Je sais m'orienter pour trouver le bon itinéraire.

Because un raccourci (a shortcut) is a noun, use connaître.

Do you know a shortcut for this route?
Tu connais un raccourci pour cet itinéraire ?
