Breakdown of Vous aimez le café italien ?

Questions & Answers about Vous aimez le café italien ?

Why is there a le before café? In English we just say "Italian coffee".

In French, when you use verbs of preference like aimer (to like), adorer (to love), or détester (to hate), you must use a definite article (le, la, l', or les) to talk about the thing you like in general.

How does the word italien relate to asking about origins with d'où?

D'où asks "from where" (origin). While this sentence is a yes/no question about your preferences, the adjective italien represents the origin of the coffee! If someone asked D'où vient le café ? (Where does the coffee come from?), the answer would be that it is italien. Notice that adjectives of origin always go after the noun in French.

Why isn't italien capitalized here?

In French, nationalities are only capitalized when they are used as a noun referring to a person (like un Italien for "an Italian man"). When used as an adjective describing an object, they are always lowercase.

How do we know this is a question without a question word or est-ce que?

This is an "intonation question." You simply take the normal word order of a statement (Vous aimez le café italien) and raise the pitch of your voice at the end. This is the most common way to ask casual questions in everyday spoken French.
