Questions & Answers about J'ai des messages pour toi.
Why is it J'ai and not Je ai?
In French, when a short word ending in a vowel like je (I) is followed by a word starting with a vowel, the first vowel is dropped and replaced with an apostrophe. This is called elision. Here, je combines with ai (have) to make J'ai so that it flows smoothly when spoken. Which form of the verb to have is ai?
ai is the specific form of the verb avoir (to have) that goes with je (I). Just like we say I have but he has in English, French uses J'ai for I have, Tu as for you have, and Il a or Elle a for he or she has. Why do we need the word des? Can I just say J'ai messages?
In French, you almost always need an article (a little word like a, the, or some) before a noun. des is the plural word for some. While in English you can skip it and just say I have messages, in French you must say I have some messages (J'ai des messages). Why is it pour toi instead of pour tu?
tu is a subject pronoun, used when you are doing the action. After a preposition like pour (for), you must use what is called a stress pronoun. The stress pronoun for you is toi, so for you is always pour toi. Does messages sound exactly like the English word?
They look identical but sound quite different! In French, the ending sounds a bit like the age in the English word mirage. Also, remember that the final s in French plural words like messages is silent. Learn J'ai des messages pour toi and more in French
