Questions & Answers about Kukaan ei halua häiriötä, kun on yö.
Why does the sentence start with Kukaan ei instead of Ei kukaan?
When kukaan (nobody) is the subject doing the action, Finnish usually puts it before the negative verb, similar to English word order. So Kukaan ei halua means Nobody wants. If the word was acting as an object later in the sentence, the ei would usually come first.
Why is the verb halua instead of haluaa?
Because this is a negative sentence. In Finnish, you use the negative verb ei combined with the connegative form of the main verb. To get this form, you take the personal ending off the positive verb. So haluaa (wants) becomes ei halua (does not want).
Why is the word for disturbance, häiriötä, in the partitive case here?
In Finnish, if a sentence is negative, the object must be in the partitive case. Since nobody wants the disturbance, the sentence is negative, forcing the basic word häiriö into the partitive form häiriötä.
Why does the sentence just say on yö instead of translating the English word it?
Finnish does not use dummy subjects like the English word it when talking about time, weather, or general conditions. You simply use the verb directly, so on yö translates perfectly to it is night.
