Questions & Answers about ما به قارهی آفریقا رفتیم و آنها به کشور فرانسه.
Why do we use the phrase قارهی آفریقا (continent of Africa) instead of just saying آفریقا?
This uses the Explanatory Ezafe. In Farsi, it is very common and stylistically polished to pair a general geographic noun like قاره (continent), کشور (country), or شهر (city) with its specific proper name using an Ezafe. While you can just say آفریقا, adding the category word is a natural way to sound more formal or precise.
Why is there no verb at the very end of the sentence after فرانسه?
The verb رفتند (they went) is omitted to avoid repetition. In Farsi, when two joined clauses share the same basic action, you can drop the verb in the second clause. What is especially interesting for learners at this level is that Farsi allows this even when the subject changes from ما to آنها, meaning the omitted verb would have had a completely different personal ending!
Why is a written ی added to قارهی but not to کشور when linking them to their proper nouns?
The word قاره ends in a silent ه, which produces an 'e' vowel sound. When adding an Ezafe to words ending in vowels, you must bridge the sounds with a written ی (ye). Since کشور ends in a consonant, the Ezafe is simply pronounced as a short 'e' and is generally not written out.
