Explanatory Ezafe for proper nouns

The Explanatory Ezafe

In English, we usually place a category right next to a proper noun (like "Mount Damavand" or "Fars Province"), or we use the word "of" (like "the city of Tehran").

In Farsi, to connect a general categorical noun to its specific proper name, we use the Explanatory Ezafe. You simply link the category word (country, city, lake, etc.) to the specific proper noun using the short Ezafe vowel.

Vowel Endings

Just as with possession or adjectives, if the first noun (the general category) ends in a vowel sound like a silent ه, the Ezafe takes a ye sound. In modern writing, this is typically shown by attaching the letter ی to the end of the word.

Several common geographic categories end in this silent ه, such as قاره (continent), دریاچه (lake), منطقه (region), and جزیره (island).

Naming Geographic Features

This simple Ezafe structure is all you need to name almost any geographic or administrative entity in Farsi. You will use it consistently to specify mountains (کوه), mountain chains (رشته‌کوه), and provinces (استان).
