Questions & Answers about در سرشماری جدید، جمعیت شهر بیست درصد افزایش پیدا کرده است.
Why is there no word for 'by' in bist darsad afzayesh?
In English, we say something increased 'by' twenty percent, but Farsi doesn't use a preposition here. You just place the percentage, bist darsad, directly before the compound verb afzayesh peyda kardan to show the degree of the change.
The verb karda ast is singular. Is this because of the percentage or the subject?
The verb agrees with the main subject of the sentence, which is jam'iyyat (population). Since jam'iyyat is treated as a singular collective noun, the verb takes the third-person singular form. The phrase bist darsad just tells us how much it increased; it isn't the grammatical subject here.
Why do we use the verb peyda karda ast (has found) for 'has increased'?
Afzayesh peyda kardan is a common compound verb that literally translates to 'to find increase'. While you could also use the formal verb afzayesh yaftan (to increase), pairing peyda kardan with nouns like afzayesh (increase) or kahesh (decrease) is the standard way to express these changes in everyday Farsi.
How is the word sar-shomari (census) formed?
It is a compound word made of sar (head) and shomari (counting or numbering, related to the verb shomordan). So it literally translates to a 'headcount', which perfectly describes a census!
