Questions & Answers about نوجوان بالغ توقع دارد به او اجازه دهی انتخاب کند.
Why are there two verbs in the subjunctive form back-to-back (ejâze dehi and entekhâb konad)?
This sentence uses a chain of verbs! The first verb, tavaqqo' dârad (expects), triggers the subjunctive for the next action: ejâze dehi (that you permit). Because ejâze dâdan is a verb of permission, it also requires the action being permitted to be in the subjunctive. That is why entekhâb konad (that he chooses) is also in the subjunctive.
Shouldn't the subjunctive of the verb to give be bedehi? Why is it just dehi here?
You are right that the standard subjunctive of giving is bedehi. However, in many common compound verbs like ejâze dâdan (to permit) or anjâm dâdan (to do), the be- prefix is frequently dropped in modern Farsi. Both ejâze dehi and ejâze bedehi are perfectly correct, but dropping the prefix sounds very natural here.
Why do we use be u (to him) instead of just using u or u râ as the object?
In English, you permit 'someone' to do something. But in Farsi, you literally give permission 'to' someone. The verb ejâze dâdan always requires the preposition be for the person receiving the permission.
How can I keep track of who is doing what in this verb chain?
You have to look closely at the personal endings on each verb. tavaqqo' dârad ends in -ad, so it means 'he/she expects'. The next verb, ejâze dehi, ends in -i, which means 'you permit'. Finally, entekhâb konad goes back to -ad, meaning 'he/she chooses'. Literally, the sentence reads: 'The mature teenager expects that you permit to him that he chooses.'
