Why do we use ke here when the English translation uses "what"?
In Farsi, reported questions are introduced by the conjunction ke (that). It connects the main verb porsidand to the question clause. The English "what" actually corresponds to the word cheqadr (how much) later in the sentence, because Farsi asks "how much is the price?" instead of "what is the price?".
Why is the verb ast (is) in the present tense when the main verb porsidand (they asked) is in the past tense?
Unlike English, Farsi does not shift tenses backwards in reported speech. You keep the exact tense the speaker originally used. Since the original direct question was "How much is the price?", the reported version keeps the present tense ast.
Where does the question word cheqadr (how much) go in a reported question?
It stays in the exact same place it would be in a direct question! Farsi doesn't change the word order for reported questions like English does. The direct question is qeymat cheqadr ast?, so you just place that exact structure right after ke.
How is the word now-sâz (newly built) formed?
It is a compound adjective made of now (new) and sâz, which is the present stem of the verb sâkhtan (to build). Combining a noun or adjective with a verb's present stem is a very common pattern for creating new descriptive words in Farsi.
