Reporting Wh- Questions
To report a Wh- question (using words like where, what, why, or how), use the verb پرسیدن (to ask) followed by که (that) and the original question.
Unlike English, Farsi does not shift the tense or word order of the reported clause. It stays exactly as it was originally asked in the standard indicative mood.
| The buyer asked where the real estate agency is. | خریدار پرسید که بنگاه املاک کجاست.kharidâr porsid ke bongâh-e amlâk kojâst |
You can use this pattern with any question word, such as چقدر (how much), چرا (why), چطور (how), or کی (when).
| A buyer asked what the square footage of the parking is. | یک خریدار پرسید که متراژ پارکینگ چقدر است.yek kharidâr porsid ke metrâzhe pârking cheqadr ast. |
| They asked why the newly built apartment does not have a balcony. | آنها پرسیدند که چرا آپارتمان نوساز بالکن ندارد.ânhâ porsidand ke cherâ âpârtemân now-sâz bâlkon nadârad. |
| The buyer asked how the heating system and the elevator work. | خریدار پرسید که سیستم گرمایش و آسانسور چطور کار میکنند.kharidâr porsid ke sistem garmâyesh va âsânsor chetor kâr mikonand. |
| We asked when the deal for the well-lit house takes place. | ما پرسیدیم که معاملهی خانهی نورگیر کی انجام میشود.mâ porsidim ke mo'âmele-ye khâne-ye nurgir key anjâm mishavad. |
Asking "Who" and "Which"
The rule remains exactly the same for questions involving چه کسی (who) or کدام (which).
| The buyer asked who the landlord of this newly built property is. | خریدار پرسید که چه کسی صاحبخانهی این ملک نوساز است.kharidâr porsid ke che kasi sâheb-khâne-ye in melk-e nowsâz ast. |
| The new buyer asked which floor the parking is on. | خریدار جدید پرسید که پارکینگ در کدام طبقه است.kharidâr jadid porsid ke pârking dar kodâm tabaqe ast. |
