Questions & Answers about دانشجو امروز کلاس شیمی دارد.
Why does emruz (today) come after the subject instead of at the beginning of the sentence?
Time words like emruz are very flexible in Farsi. They usually go right at the beginning of the sentence or immediately after the subject (daneshju). Both positions are completely natural, but remember that the verb darad (has) must always stay at the very end.
How do the words for "class" and "chemistry" connect in this sentence?
They are connected by the ezafe, which is a short "-e" sound added to the end of the first word. Even though it's not written as a separate letter, you pronounce it as kelas-e shimi (literally "class of chemistry").
The English translation says "The university student", but I don't see a word for "the". How do we know it's specific?
Farsi does not have a separate word for "the". A plain noun like daneshju can mean "a university student", "university students" (in a general sense), or "the university student". You just rely on the context of the conversation to know which one is meant.
Since this is a present tense sentence, why doesn't the verb darad start with the mi- prefix?
The verb dashtan (to have) is a famous exception to the normal present tense rules! While almost all other verbs need the mi- prefix to show present tense (like miravad for "goes"), dashtan never takes it in the simple present. It is always just daram, dari, darad, etc.
