Questions & Answers about آنها تصمیم گرفتند که به جای فلز، از چوب برای صندلیها استفاده کنند.
How does be jâ-ye translate to "instead of", and what is the -ye at the end of it?
be jâ-ye literally means "in the place of". The -ye at the end is an ezafe (the linking sound). Just like you use an ezafe to link a noun to an adjective, you use it here to link the preposition phrase be jâ (in place) to the noun felez (metal).
Why do we need the preposition az before chub (wood)? The English translation just says "use wood".
The Farsi verb for "to use" is az [something] estefâde kardan. You literally say "to do use from [something]". Because of this, you must always include az (from) before the thing being used, which in this case is chub.
Why is the verb at the end estefâde konand instead of the regular present tense estefâde mikonand?
The sentence uses tasmim gereftand ke (they decided that). When you use a verb expressing a decision, desire, or necessity followed by ke (that), the second verb must be in the subjunctive mood. estefâde konand is the present subjunctive form, dropping the usual mi- prefix to show that the action is a plan or idea rather than an established fact.
Could be jâ-ye felez (instead of metal) go somewhere else in the sentence?
Yes! Farsi word order is quite flexible with prepositional phrases. Placing be jâ-ye felez right after ke (that) simply emphasizes the contrast between the metal and the wood early on. You could easily move it after chub, as long as the main verb estefâde konand stays at the very end of the sentence.
