Questions & Answers about وقتی که جایزه را گرفت، گریه کرد، اگرچه خوشحال بود.
Why do we use the simple past tense bud (was) after agarche instead of a subjunctive verb?
When agarche (although) introduces a fact or a situation that actually happened, it is followed by an normal indicative tense. Because it is a fact that he was happy, we just use the simple past bud. You only use the subjunctive after agarche if you are talking about a hypothetical or unlikely situation (meaning "even if").
Do I always have to use ke after vaghti?
In formal or written Farsi, vaghti ke (literally "the time that") is the standard way to say "when" to connect two parts of a sentence. However, in everyday spoken Farsi, it is very common to drop the ke and simply say vaghti jâyeze râ gereft.
Why is râ used after jâyeze?
The word râ is used to show that jâyeze (prize) is a specific direct object. Because the sentence says he got the prize (a specific one that we already know about), we must use râ. If he had just won a prize in general, you would drop râ and say jâyezeyi gereft.
How does the verb gerye kard work here?
gerye kard is a compound verb, which is very common in Farsi. It is made by combining the noun gerye (crying) with the verb kardan (to do). So it literally translates to "he did crying". Here, kardan is conjugated in the simple past tense for the "he/she" form, which is kard.
