Questions & Answers about آنها باید قبل از اینکه کیک را ببرند، به آرایشگاه بروند.

Why are there two verbs in the subjunctive form (ببرند and بروند) in this sentence?
In Farsi, certain words require the verb that follows them to be in the present subjunctive. ببرند (they cut) is in the subjunctive because of our new phrase قبل از اینکه (before). The second verb, بروند (they go), is in the subjunctive because it is triggered by باید (must) at the start of the sentence.
Does ببرند mean "they cut" or "they take"?
It can mean both depending on the pronunciation, because they are spelled exactly the same! The infinitive for "to cut" is بریدن, giving us the subjunctive ببرند (beborand). The infinitive for "to take" is بردن, which gives us ببرند (bebarand). Here, the context of the cake tells us it must be "cut".
Why is بروند at the very end of the sentence, so far away from باید?
Farsi puts the main verb at the end of the sentence. باید (must) comes early on, but its partner verb بروند (they go) waits until the very end. The entire "before they cut the cake" phrase (قبل از اینکه کیک را ببرند) is simply placed in the middle of the main sentence.
Why do we need the word را after کیک?
را is the specific direct object marker. Because the sentence refers to "the cake" (a specific, known cake) rather than just "a cake" in general, we place را immediately after کیک.
