Questions & Answers about بیا بعضی از این کتابها را به بچههای نیازمند اهدا کنیم.
The translation says "let's", but doesn't biyâ just mean "come"?
Yes, biyâ is the command form of "to come". But in Farsi, you can combine biyâ (or the plural/formal biyâyid) with a second verb in the present subjunctive to mean "let's do something". Here, biyâ pairs with ehdâ konim (we donate) to create the meaning "let's donate".
Why is biyâ in the singular form, while ehdâ konim is in the "we" (plural) form?
biyâ is directed at the person you are talking to, which in this case is one person (informal). However, the action of donating includes both you and that person, so the main verb takes the "we" ending: ehdâ konim. If you were suggesting this to a group of friends, you would say biyâyid ... ehdâ konim.
I thought the present subjunctive requires the prefix be-. Why is the verb just ehdâ konim?
ehdâ kardan (to donate) is a compound verb. With compound verbs that use kardan (to do), Farsi speakers usually drop the be- prefix in the subjunctive. It is grammatically correct to say ehdâ bekonim, but ehdâ konim is much more common and natural in everyday Farsi.
Why do we need the object marker râ here? Doesn't "some" (ba'zi) make the object unspecific?
Even though you are only taking "some", the group of books you are choosing from is highly specific because of the word "these": in ketâb-hâ (these books). Because the source group is specific, the entire phrase ba'zi az in ketâb-hâ (some of these books) requires the specific direct object marker râ.
What is the invisible sound connecting bačče-hâ (children) and niyâzmand (needy)?
They are linked by the ezâfe, which connects a noun to the adjective describing it. Because the plural suffix -hâ ends in the vowel "â", Farsi inserts a "y" sound to make it easier to say the connecting vowel. That is why it is pronounced bačče-hâ-ye niyâzmand.
