Questions & Answers about داستان جدید و جالب است.
I see the word و (and) between the adjectives. How is it actually pronounced in everyday speech?
In formal Farsi, it is pronounced va. However, in everyday spoken Farsi, it almost always changes to just an o sound. So instead of jadid va jâleb, you will usually hear people say jadid-o jâleb.
Does the verb است (is) always have to go at the very end after both adjectives?
Yes! Farsi puts verbs at the end of the sentence. Even though you are listing multiple adjectives connected by و (and), you must list all of them before closing the sentence with the verb است.
I have learned that adjectives usually connect to nouns with an 'e' sound. Why isn't it dâstân-e jadid here?
Because the sentence says 'The story is new', not 'the new story'. The connecting 'e' sound (the Ezafe) is used when an adjective directly describes a noun right next to it. Here, the adjectives are separated from the noun by the 'is' relationship, so no Ezafe is needed after dâstân.
Does و work the same way for connecting adjectives as it does for connecting nouns?
Exactly! The conjunction و is very versatile. Just as you can use it to link nouns, you can use it right here to link adjectives like jadid and jâleb with no change to the grammar rules.
