Basic Conjunctions
Use conjunctions to connect words, phrases, or independent clauses. The three most common are و (and), اما or ولی (but), and یا (or).
And (و)
Use و to link nouns, adjectives, or entire sentences.
| We have a dog and a cat. | ما سگ و گربه داریم.mâ sag o gorbe dârim. |
| The doctor is young and smart. | دکتر جوان و باهوش است.doktor javân va bâhush ast. |
But (اما / ولی)
Farsi uses اما and ولی to show contrast. They both mean "but" and are interchangeable.
| My brother is smart, but he is not lazy. | برادر من باهوش است ولی تنبل نیست.barâdar-e man bâhush ast vali tanbal nist. |
| The room is dark, but the yard is bright. | اتاق تاریک است اما حیاط روشن است.otâq târik ast ammâ hayât rowshan ast. |
| That book is old but interesting. | آن کتاب قدیمی ولی جالب است.ân ketâb ghadimi vali jâleb ast. |
Or (یا)
Use یا to offer choices. It works exactly like "or" in English.
| Do you want tea or coffee? | شما چای میخواهید یا قهوه؟shomâ châi mikhâhid yâ qahve? |
| Is this room bright or dark? | آیا این اتاق روشن است یا تاریک؟âyâ in otâq rowshan ast yâ târik? |
Add یا نه at the end of a question to ask "or not?".
| Is this movie interesting or not? | آیا این فیلم جالب است یا نه؟âyâ in film jâleb ast yâ na? |
