Questions & Answers about بیمارستان بزرگ و مغازهی کوچک اینجا هستند.
Why does مغازهی end with a ی while بیمارستان doesn't have any extra letters?
This is the Ezafe particle at work! Both nouns are linking to an adjective. بیمارستان (hospital) ends in a consonant, so it just takes an invisible "-e" sound to connect to بزرگ (big). However, مغازه (shop) ends in a vowel sound (the letter ه sounds like "e" here). To avoid two vowels clashing, we add a "y" sound, making the Ezafe "-ye". In writing, we show this by adding ی to the end of the word.
Why are the adjectives placed after the nouns?
In Farsi, an adjective comes directly after the noun it describes. Instead of saying "big hospital," you say "hospital big" (بیمارستان بزرگ). The Ezafe particle (the spoken "-e" or "-ye" sound) acts as a little bridge holding the noun and its adjective together.
Where is the word for "the" in this sentence?
Farsi doesn't have a direct equivalent for the definite article "the". A simple noun phrase like بیمارستان بزرگ can mean either "a big hospital" or "the big hospital". You have to figure it out from the context. Since we are pointing out exactly where these specific places are (اینجا هستند - "are here"), translating it with "the" makes the most sense in English.
Why do we use the plural verb هستند ("are") if the hospital and the shop are both singular words?
Just like in English, when you connect two singular things with "and" (و), they form a plural subject. "The hospital and the shop" equals "they". Therefore, we use هستند (they are) and place it at the very end of the sentence, which is the standard spot for verbs in Farsi.
