Passive participles as adjectives (...-shode)

Turning Actions into Adjectives with شده

In English, we frequently describe nouns using past participles (like a "restored" car or a "polished" hood). Farsi achieves this by attaching شده to a noun (often the non-verbal part of a compound verb) to create a compound passive participle.

For instance, the word for "restoration" is بازسازی. By adding شده, it becomes the adjective بازسازی‌شده (restored). Just like any regular adjective in Farsi, it follows the noun it modifies, connected by the ezafe.

This structure perfectly describes the stages of fixing up a classic car. For example, a chassis (شاسی) that underwent rust removal (زنگ‌زدایی) becomes rust-removed (زنگ‌زدایی‌شده).

We use the same pattern to describe parts that have undergone polishing (پولیش) or welding (جوشکاری):

Reduced Relative Clauses

Grammatically, these compound participles act as "reduced relative clauses." A longer descriptive phrase like "the upholstery which was replaced" shrinks into "the replaced upholstery" (تودوزی تعویض‌شده).

You can also chain these passive participles with other regular adjectives. To describe original factory parts (فابریک) that have been detached (جداشده), simply string them together after the noun with ezafe.
