Questions & Answers about Hij zal zich voordoen als een lastige klant.
How does zich voordoen als compare to doen alsof for "pretending"?
Zich voordoen als specifically means "to pass oneself off as" or "to pretend to be" a specific role or person. Doen alsof means "to act as if" and requires a subclause, like Hij zal doen alsof hij een lastige klant is. Using zich voordoen als is a more direct, higher-level way to express taking on a false identity.
Since voordoen is a separable verb, why is it written as one word here?
It is written together because it acts as the infinitive at the end of the sentence, pushed there by the modal auxiliary verb zal (will). If you used the present tense without a modal verb, it would separate: Hij doet zich voor als een lastige klant.
Why does lastig get an -e ending even though it follows the indefinite article een?
Lastig (difficult or bothersome) gets an -e ending because klant (customer) is a de-word (de klant). As a quick refresher: adjectives following een only drop the -e if they are modifying a het-word. Since it is a de-word, lastige keeps the standard ending.
