Questions & Answers about Ik geloof we overnachten over twee dagen in het hotel.
Why doesn't the verb overnachten go at the end of the sentence like a normal subclause?
Because the conjunction dat (that) has been dropped! In spoken Dutch, after verbs of thought or speech like geloven (to believe), you can omit dat. When you do this, the subclause stops acting like a subordinate clause (which usually pushes the verb to the end) and reverts to a normal main clause with V2 word order, giving us we overnachten.
Why is over twee dagen translated as 'in two days'?
When talking about when a future event will happen, the preposition over is used to mean 'in' a certain amount of time. If you were to use in twee dagen instead, a Dutch speaker would understand that as the duration it takes to complete an action (e.g., 'I will finish this book in two days'), rather than when the event begins.
Is overnachten a separable verb?
No, overnachten (to stay overnight) is an inseparable verb, even though it looks like a combination of a preposition (over) and a noun. Because it is inseparable, the prefix does not move to the end of the clause, and its past participle is formed without ge-, making it simply overnacht.
The sentence translates to 'we are staying', but overnachten is in the simple present tense. Is that standard for future plans?
