Questions & Answers about Schoonmaken moet je het tandwiel vooral niet.
Why is the infinitive Schoonmaken at the very beginning of the sentence?
This is called fronting. By moving the infinitive schoonmaken (to clean) to the first position, it gets strong contrastive focus. The speaker is emphasizing that whatever else you might do to the sprocket (like oil it or replace it), cleaning it is specifically what you must avoid.
Does moving the verb to the front cause inversion here?
Yes. Because Schoonmaken takes up the first position in the sentence, the finite (conjugated) verb moet must take the second position. This pushes the subject je to the third position, right after the verb. This is the standard V2 (verb-second) rule in action.
Why does the translation say "shouldn't" when moeten means "must"?
In Dutch, moeten combined with a negative like niet is frequently used to express a strong "should not" or "must not" when giving advice or instructions. While you could use the conditional zou ... niet moeten, the present tense moet is much more direct and common in spoken Dutch.
Why are the words vooral niet at the very end?
Normally, the infinitive schoonmaken would sit at the very end of the clause (Je moet het tandwiel vooral niet schoonmaken). Because it was fronted to the beginning for emphasis, the back of the sentence is left empty, making the adverbial phrase vooral niet the last element.
