Questions & Answers about Zelden ben ik zo bang geweest.
Why is the word order ben ik instead of ik ben?
By putting the restrictive adverb zelden (rarely) at the front of the sentence for emphasis, you trigger the Dutch V2 (verb-second) rule. The verb ben must stay in the second position, forcing the subject ik to move right after it.
English also says 'Rarely have I...'. Is this the exact same grammar rule in both languages?
They are related but distinct. English has a specific inversion rule for negative words like 'rarely' or 'never'. Dutch, however, is just applying its normal V2 rule: any time a main clause starts with something other than the subject, the verb and subject swap places. Putting zelden first simply makes the sentence sound more dramatic than the neutral Ik ben zelden zo bang geweest.
Why do we use ben here when the English translation says 'have I been'?
To form the perfect tense of the verb zijn (to be), Dutch uses zijn as the auxiliary (helping) verb instead of hebben. So, while English says 'I have been', Dutch literally says 'I am been' (ik ben geweest).
Could I put geweest earlier in the sentence, like Zelden ben ik geweest zo bang?
No, that would break the Dutch sentence structure. In main clauses, the conjugated verb (ben) takes the second position, but any remaining verbs in the sentence, like the past participle geweest, must be pushed to the very end of the clause.
