Questions & Answers about Weet jij waarom deze waarneming mij misleidt?
Why can't I say Ben jij aan het weten to align with the continuous aspect of the English translation?
In Dutch, the continuous aspect (aan het + infinitive) cannot be used with cognitive verbs (verbs about mental processes, like weten, begrijpen, or denken) or stative verbs (verbs describing a state, like zijn or lijken). You must always use the simple tenses for these, which is why it is strictly Weet jij.
The English translation says 'is misleading', so why doesn't the Dutch clause use mij aan het misleiden is?
While misleiden (to mislead) is an action verb and technically can be used in the continuous form, Dutch uses the aan het construction much less frequently than English uses its '-ing' form. Using the simple present misleidt is heavily preferred and sounds more natural here, even though the action is happening right now.
Why is misleidt pushed to the very end of the sentence?
The word waarom (why) introduces a subordinate clause. In Dutch subordinate clauses, the conjugated verb is always sent to the end. This places the subject deze waarneming and the direct object mij before the verb misleidt.
How is the noun waarneming formed?
It is derived from the separable verb waarnemen, which means to observe or to perceive (literally 'to take true'). Adding the suffix -ing to the verb stem turns it into the noun waarneming, meaning observation or perception.
