Why is it het partnerschap when other words from this lesson like vriendschap use de?
The suffix -schap is notoriously tricky because it doesn't have a single fixed gender. Many words are de words (like de vriendschap, de wetenschap, de blijdschap). However, a specific group of -schap words are het words. These often refer to a status, role, or collective, such as het partnerschap (the partnership), het lidmaatschap (the membership), het moederschap (motherhood), and het landschap (the landscape). You simply have to memorize these common het exceptions!
The English translation uses the simple past ("confirmed"), but the Dutch sentence uses hebben... bevestigd (present perfect). Why?
In spoken and everyday written Dutch, the present perfect (hebben bevestigd) is heavily preferred for completed events in the past, even when a specific time like gisteren (yesterday) is mentioned. English strictly requires the simple past when you state when an event happened, but Dutch does not have this restriction and defaults to the present perfect for most past actions.
Why is gisteren placed before officieel?
Dutch generally follows the "Time-Manner-Place" rule for word order in the middle of a sentence. Gisteren tells us when it happened (Time), and officieel tells us how it happened (Manner). Therefore, the time must come before the manner.
Why doesn't the past participle bevestigd get a ge- prefix at the beginning?
You don't add the ge- prefix if the verb already begins with an unstressed, inseparable prefix. Because bevestigen starts with be-, it skips the ge- in the past participle. Other common prefixes that block ge- include ver-, ont-, er-, and her-.
