Questions & Answers about Waar moet ik het nieuwe kleed leggen?
Why do we use leggen instead of liggen in this sentence?
Leggen is the action of putting something down horizontally, just like 'to lay' in English. Because you (ik) are actively placing an object (het nieuwe kleed), you use the transitive verb leggen. If the rug was already on the floor and you were just describing its location, you would use liggen ('to lie').
Why do we use leggen to put a rug down, rather than zetten?
In Dutch, the verb you use to put something down depends on the object's shape and position. A rug (kleed) is flat and rests horizontally on the floor, so we use leggen. If you were putting down something upright, like a vase or a lamp, you would use zetten.
Kleed is a het-word. Why does the adjective nieuw get an -e at the end here?
You add an -e to the adjective because it follows the definite article het. The only time you drop the -e for a het-word is when you use the indefinite article een (or no article at all), which would be een nieuw kleed.
Why does leggen go all the way at the end of the sentence?
