Questions & Answers about Biedt het hotel een compensatie aan als de airconditioning kapot is?
Why is aan placed right in the middle of the sentence, before als?
It is the prefix of the separable verb aanbieden (to offer). In a main clause, the conjugated part (biedt) moves to the front to form a yes/no question, and the prefix (aan) gets pushed to the end of that main clause, right before the subclause begins.
Why is the verb is at the very end of the sentence?
The word als (if) is a subordinating conjunction, functioning the same way as zonder dat or in plaats van dat. In Dutch, subordinating conjunctions introduce a subclause and kick the working verb (is) all the way to the end of that clause.
What is the difference between bieden and aanbieden?
While both translate to "to offer" in English, aanbieden is used when presenting a product, service, compensation, or help to someone. Bieden by itself is mostly used for bidding money at an auction or offering a price.
Could I use gebroken instead of kapot for a broken air conditioner?
No. When a machine, appliance, or system is malfunctioning or out of order, you must use kapot or stuk. Gebroken is used when something is physically snapped into pieces or shattered, like a bone or a glass pane.
