Questions & Answers about Je had de mogelijkheid moeten gebruiken.
Why does this sentence use moeten instead of a past participle like gemoeten?
This is because of the 'infinitive for participle' rule (often called IPP). When a modal verb like moeten is used with another verb in a perfect tense, it stays in its infinitive form instead of changing to a past participle. Because of this, we say had ... moeten gebruiken instead of 'had ... gemoeten gebruiken'.
Does had moeten gebruiken literally mean 'had must use'? How do we get 'should have used'?
Literally, it translates closer to 'had to have used'. In Dutch, combining the past tense of hebben (had) with the infinitive moeten is the standard way to express an unfulfilled past obligation. This combination is exactly how you translate the English concept of 'should have' done something.
Why are both moeten and gebruiken placed at the very end of the sentence?
In Dutch perfect tenses, the conjugated auxiliary verb (had) takes the second position in the main clause, and all the other verbs in the verb chain (moeten gebruiken) are pushed to the very end. The direct object (de mogelijkheid) must be placed before that final verb cluster.
Could I use kans instead of mogelijkheid here?
