Questions & Answers about Wij accepteren het positieve en het negatieve.
Why do positief and negatief get an -e at the end here?
They are being used as nouns. When you turn an adjective into a noun to talk about an abstract concept (like "the positive" or "the good"), you add an -e to the base adjective.
Why does positief change to positieve with a v?
This is a standard Dutch spelling rule. When an adjective ends in a long vowel sound followed by an -f, and you add an -e to it, the f changes to a v. The exact same thing happens with negatief becoming negatieve.
Why do we use het for these words instead of de?
When you turn an adjective into a noun to represent an abstract idea, concept, or quality, it always takes the neuter article het.
If I wanted to say "the positive people," would I use this same form?
No. If you use an adjective as a noun to refer to a group of people, it takes de instead of het and gets an -n at the end. So de positieven would mean "the positive people," while het positieve strictly means the abstract concept of "the positive".
