In Dutch, you can turn an adjective into a noun to talk about an abstract concept, like "the good part" or "the unexpected." This is very useful when evaluating situations and discussing life experiences.
Abstract Concepts with "Het"
To talk about a general idea or quality, use the neuter article het and add -e to the adjective. This translates to English phrases like "the positive thing" or "the unknown."
- positief (positive) becomes het positieve (the positive)
- onbekend (unknown) becomes het onbekende (the unknown)
| We accept the positive and the negative. | Wij accepteren het positieve en het negatieve. |
| The positive thing about the situation was very clear. | Het positieve van de situatie was heel duidelijk. |
| The unexpected was actually very beautiful. | Het onverwachte was eigenlijk heel mooi. |
Evaluating Events
When reflecting on a situation (de situatie) or event (de gebeurtenis), two very helpful verbs are blijken (to turn out / to appear) and ervaren (to experience).
| The unknown often turns out to be very logical. | Het onbekende blijkt vaak heel logisch te zijn. |
| It is difficult to experience the unknown. | Het is moeilijk om het onbekende te ervaren. |
"Something" + Adjective
When you want to say "something good" or "something unexpected", Dutch uses the word iets (something) followed by the adjective. For this pattern, you add an -s to the end of the adjective instead of an -e.
| Sometimes the negative turns out to actually be a good thing. | Soms blijkt het negatieve eigenlijk iets goeds te zijn. |
| That event has something unexpected. | Die gebeurtenis heeft iets onverwachts. |
The Only Thing vs. The Only One
The adjective enig means "only". When you turn it into a noun, the article you choose changes its meaning entirely:
- Use het enige to mean "the only thing" (an abstract concept).
- Use de enige to mean "the only one" (referring to a specific person).
| The only thing was the bad weather. | Het enige was het slechte weer. |
| He was the only one who was angry. | Hij was de enige die boos was. |
