Questions & Answers about Onze afdeling wil dit probleem gezamenlijk aanpakken.
Could we use allemaal instead of gezamenlijk here?
Yes, but it changes the nuance. Using allemaal (all) focuses on the individuals, meaning every single person in the department wants to tackle it. Using gezamenlijk emphasizes that the department will act as one united group (jointly).
Why is aanpakken written as one word at the very end of the sentence?
The word aanpakken (to tackle) is a separable verb (aan + pakken). However, because there is a modal verb (wil) earlier in the sentence, the main verb gets pushed to the very end and stays in its full, unseparated dictionary form.
Why do we say onze afdeling but dit probleem?
This is a good reminder about noun genders. The word afdeling is a de-word, so it takes onze (our) and deze (this). The word probleem is a het-word, which means it takes ons (our) and dit (this).
What is the literal translation of aanpakken?
It combines aan (on/at) and pakken (to grab or take). Literally, it means to grab hold of something, which is exactly how we use the English word tackle when dealing with an issue.
