Questions & Answers about De tas van mijn moeder ligt op de tafel.
Why does the Dutch sentence say de tas van mijn moeder instead of using an 's like in English?
In Dutch, the most common way to show possession is by using van (of). So, instead of saying "my mother's bag," you literally say "the bag of my mother." While mijn moeders tas is grammatically possible, the van structure is much more natural and frequently used.
Why does it use ligt instead of is?
Dutch strongly prefers using positional verbs (liggen, staan, zitten) to describe where an object is located, rather than just using zijn (to be). Because a bag is usually soft and rests horizontally, it ligt (lies). If it were an upright object with a clear base, like a vase, you would use staan (to stand).
Why is it op de tafel and not aan de tafel?
Op means "on" or "on top of," which is exactly where the bag is resting. You would use aan de tafel (at the table) if you were talking about a person sitting at the table to eat or work.
